Natividad had experienced worse nights in her life. About twice, maybe. Maybe three times. Not four.

She had been afraid that her twin might have to summon a demon. She had been afraid of what might happen to her twin if he summoned a demon. But she had not imagined anything like what had actually happened. She hardly knew how to think about it. Miguel sat as far to one side of the back seat as he could get, not looking at anyone, huddling into his jacket like he wanted to hide from a lot more than just the cold. He didn’t want to talk to her, which Natividad understood, not in a crowded car, sure. But he wouldn’t look at her either, and that scared her.

Alejandro sat next to him, with one of his long hands wrapped around Miguel’s wrist. At first Miguel had tried to pull away from that grip, but Alejandro hadn’t let go. That hold was not meant as restraint. It was like an immovable statement: I am not afraid of you. Natividad was so grateful their big brother was here. She was so grateful Alejandro was willing to touch Miguel, to sit next to him, to be there.

Luis Santibañez sat in the front passenger seat, with the awful, squishy package of disgusting eyeballs. Natividad had wanted to put it in the trunk, but Luis had vetoed that. They’d freeze in the trunk, he said, and there was every chance Chief Bollman would want them kept in decent condition. That meant the horrible things had to be in the passenger compartment with them, and she was sorry she thought they were hideous when obviously no one had asked to have a demon eat their eyeballs, but they were horrible. They were wrapped up in one of the plastic bags that had been wrapped protectively around the toddler skull and the piece of the table, and they were by Luis’ feet and not hers, but she knew what that package contained and the whole idea of that package made her want to throw up. Eyes were so much worse than the skull. And the skull had been bad enough.

Maybe two of those eyes had belonged to the child whose skull that was, and honestly, Natividad really needed to think about something else. Except that tonight, everything else that came into her head was even worse than that.

Finally, at long, long last, they pulled into the driveway of Dimilioc house. She looked at her watch. Nearly four in the morning, and she did not know when she had ever been so tired, but if she tried to sleep at all, she would have the worst nightmares, she knew it ... oh, oops, she hadn’t meant to glance around and see Luis picking up the package of eyeballs, ugh.

Out of the car, up the stairs, across the porch, and she was so glad to find Ezekiel waiting for her in the foyer, with one of his beautiful robes folded over his arm and a contained intensity in his expression that would have frightened her in anyone else.
